Advanced Technicians for composite materials and 3D printing possess specialist skills in the fields of development of high performance materials and components in: motorsport, automotive, aerospace, aeronautics, biomedical sector, sports, advanced mechanics. This is a specialized technical role in areas of design, product industrialization, production planning, quality control and testing, research and development, and specialized production departments.

Professional profile

Advanced Technicians for composite materials and 3D printing is a highly qualified job able to intervene in the various phases of design and development of high performance products. The role requires use of CAD modelling and simulation software for design. Technicians will use the most advanced production technologies in mechanical processing and in new materials (carbon fiber composite materials; metals, polymers and resins for additive manufacturing). They must be able to apply quality control and testing technologies on components and operate in the research and development area. This role also involves production planning skills for the optimization of company production processes.

Work Experience in Europe

The course offers the opportunity to spend periods abroad both as a curricular activity (internship) and as an extracurricular activity (in summer and outside the hours of the course).

The lectures

40% of teaching is entrusted to partner companies, which offer professionals, technical equipment and documentation. 30% of teaching is entrusted to professional consultants with specific experience in the field. The remaining part is entrusted to university teachers (characteristics, processing and treatment of materials) and technical institute teachers (science, technology, languages and technical topics).

Teaching

  • The two-year course offers a place for 22 secondary/high school graduates, preferably in possession of a technical and scientific diploma.
  • It is divided into four semesters for a total of about 2,000 hours of which 760 hours of internship/project work in one of the most important companies in the area that use innovative technologies for the production of composite materials in the automotive field (from motorsport to road production), aeronautics and aerospace sectors.
  • The induction phase includes refresher courses in technical drawing and mechanical drawing reading, chemical composition of materials, mechanical technology, mathematics and English.
  • Attendance is compulsory with a minimum participation of 80% of the total number of hours.
  • The course is free except for an admission fee of 200 euros.
  • There is a focus on practical-laboratory teaching that involves alternating between theoretical lessons in the classroom and in companies, exercises and group work in laboratories with specialized software.
  • Guided tours are included as well as practical collaboration with the most important motorsport companies in the Emilia-Romagna region.

Graduation

  • Upon passing a final exam, a diploma of Advanced Technician for the innovation of mechanical processes and products (V level EQF) will be issued by the Ministry of Education (MIUR).
  • This diploma permits access to public exams and is recognised with University Training Credits. The EUROPASS certificate is also issued in Italian and English.
  • Upon passing the exam, the value of the course is equivalent to the period of internship required to participate in state exams in order to qualify to the professional level of Industrial Expert.
